During the American Civil War, Col. Cord McNally has left Lt. Ned Forsythe, in charge of a Union army payroll train. However, Confederates led by Capt. Cordona, hijack the train.
A stagecoach trip is complicated by Geronimo being on the warpath in the area. The passengers include a drunk doctor, two women, a thieving bank manager, and the famous Ringo Kid.
The story narrates the misfortunes of a social outsider who tries to survive the hardships of immigrants in the United States. Veronica is the daughter of the owner of the land where Johnny works. In spite of social differences Johnny and Veronica become engaged. In the end Johnny finds out that he will have a son with another woman and decides to remain with her and begin a new life in another place.
